The best camera is the one you have with you {Cottage Grove, Oregon Photographer}

Most people expect professional photographers to be camera snobs who only use the biggest and best equipment money can buy. And to an extent, this can be true. Of course I would never shoot a paid session with my iPhone, but you know what? That little camera can be the best camera in the world if it’s the one you have with you when the perfect shot comes along.

When my daughter was born 17 months ago, I started a personal blog for our family to be able to watch her grow since they don’t live nearby. I take at least one picture of Paige every day for that blog. It is not always convenient to pull out my DSLR and put on the right lens for my current situation. Sometimes, if I was to even try that, I would miss the perfect shot all together. Because my phone is always in my pocket, I can catch those shots that show off her ever-changing personality.

Here are just a couple of examples of this theory in action.

Are these pictures technically perfect? Nope. Are they perfect for us? Yup.

I certainly won’t be enlarging these on a 20×30 canvas to hang over the fireplace, but they do serve their purpose. And I wouldn’t have gotten any of these pictures if I had to rely on my “good” camera. The best camera is the one you have with you.

Tiffani & Anthony ~ Prom 2011 Portraits {Cottage Grove, Oregon Prom Photographer}

In addition to taking the standard portraits at the Cottage Grove High School Prom, I also offered Prom mini-sessions for anyone who was interested. These sessions last about 30-minutes and take place at an outdoor location in Cottage Grove. It’s a great chance for a couple or a group of friends to have a fun portrait session that is different from the pictures their friends get at the dance, and it’s a fun excuse to get a little extra use out of those expensive Prom dresses & tuxes!

Here are a couple of my favorite shots from a Prom mini-session with Tiffani & Anthony.

Fun on Friday {Cottage Grove, Oregon Photographer}

Do you need ideas of what to do with your family this weekend? Here are a few things going on around Cottage Grove that you should consider checking out:

The Relay for Life starts tonight at 6pm and goes until Saturday at 6pm at Lincoln Middle School.

The Art Walk is happening at various merchants in downtown Cottage Grove from 6-8pm tonight.

The Cottage Grove Library is also hosting an event tonight from 5-7pm. Join them for their annual “fiesta” that includes free food, music & fun! They also have regular story-times for a variety of ages, as well as sing-alongs and other fun activities for kids. Check out their website or stop by and visit them for more details.

The Wiener Dog Races are happening tomorrow at Coiner Park, and contrary to the name, there are contests for any breed of dog!

If you have kids in car seats, be sure to stop by the fire station on Harrison between 9am and noon for the monthly car seat installation check. It’s worth a few minutes to have peace of mind that your child is riding safely.

And you won’t want to miss closing weekend of The Boys Next Door at the Cottage Theatre!

If you need something to do next week, do your produce shopping at the Grower’s Market at Coiner Park from 4-8pm and check out the Concert in the Park with local rock quartet Anticipate Pie starting at 6:30.

Three on Thursday {Cottage Grove, Oregon Photographer}

I got this post idea from Amber Fischer Photography. Her photography style is completely different from mine, but that’s why I love following her blog. One of my favorite parts of her blog is her “Ten on Tuesday” posts where she posts completely random things about herself, her business, what’s going on in her life, what she loves, and sometimes answers questions. The thought of having to do ten of any of those things is entirely overwhelming to me, so I have adapted her idea (that she got from another photographer) and decided to try out “Three on Thursday”. Three is good. I can handle three. So, here we go.

1. I am in love with my new phone. I’ve had the *original* iPhone pretty much since they came out. It was slower than dirt and crashed constantly. When David told me that there was a refurbished iPhone 4 available through the Apple website for much less than the cost of a new one, I couldn’t resist. I’ve had it for about 2 weeks and I don’t know how I lived with the old phone for so long.

2. Speaking of new phones… Any of you remember the fabulous case I had for my old iPhone? Well, it doesn’t fit the iPhone 4. Which meant that I got to design and order an fancy new case that I love even more than the old one! Want to see what the cases look like? The one on the left is the old case, and the one on the right is the new one. Ask me how to get one of these awesome cases for your iPhone, iPod or iPad (iPad cases coming soon)!

3. I love that I get to spend time looking at blogs with newborn & baby portraits because it keeps Paige entertained. She is absolutely fascinated by babies and will point them out wherever she sees them. She loves to sit on my lap while I’m checking out the latest posts on my favorite blogs and she will excitedly point out every baby she sees.

Aiden’s 5-month Easter Portraits {Brookings, Oregon Baby Portrait Photographer}

This was my second session with my great-nephew, Aiden. He was 5 months old, and it was just before Easter so we brought out a few Easter props for a short session with him. By the end of the session (in the overalls), he was tired and done having a camera in his face, but we still got some great shots!
